They are important for several reasons:

  • They protect soldiers from small arms (gun) fire
  • They are highly mobile fire platforms
  • They carry a variety of weapons to take down soldiers, aircraft, and/or other tanks
  • Armored vehicles can be modified for a variety of purposes, such as transporting wounded soldiers

Armies will use different tanks in different situations, or use none at all if they would not operate well. However, armies favor the use of tanks, which can be used in most situations.

At the start to the allies a purpose of a tank is to support infantry but they realised during the African campaign that tanks could be used as individual divisions and to be used as advancing pass enemy lines and to destroy any threats.
