The wings on a plane are responsible for producing lift, the opposing force to weight. Wings need to be in constant contact with a relative airflow in order to stay aloft. At higher altitudes the density in the air becomes lower and lower. This means that as an aircraft travels higher in the atmosphere it needs to go faster in order to increase the rate of the relative flow around the wings. At a certain height, however, many planes cannot produce enough thrust to keep up the lift. In addition, too much speed may overstress the components (ailerons, wings, flaps, spoilers, etc.) on the plane and cause them damage.
Also, check out the U-2 spy plane. It is one of the highest flying planes in the world because of its design. It has the wings of a glider, able to clutch on to any lift that exists high in the atmosphere. It also has the fuselage (body) of a jet fighter, with an extremely powerful engine.
