With the Red Sox (1914-1919), Babe was primarily a pitcher. His six season record was 89-46 with a 2.28 ERA, started 148 games, completed 107 games, and threw 17 shutouts. He led the American League in ERA and shutouts in 1916 and in complete games in 1917. He also pitched a 14 inning complete game victory in the 1916 World Series which, to this day, is the MLB record for longest complete game in World Series history. He started three World Series games, 1 in 1916 and 2 in 1918, and won them all pitching to a 0.87 ERA with 2 complete games and 1 shutout.
It would be fair to say that Ruth, during his time with the Red Sox, was one of the best pitchers in the American League and was maybe the best left handed pitcher in the American League.
He also led the American League in home runs in 1918 and 1919 when he was both playing the outfield and pitching.
His statistics with the Yankees are legendary. But a lot of people forget just how great he played with the Red Sox, I think mainly because he was a pitcher and didn't hit a slew of home runs like he did with the Yankees. So I would say that he didn't really play any better with the Yankees than he did with the Red Sox.
