When where everton founded?

Everton began their history as St Domingo's FC on the 1st of January 1878, playing their first match in the south-east corner of Stanley Park. St Domingo's Church had originally formed a cricket club and added football to their sports-armoury. The first game after the name was changed to 'Everton Football Club' took place at Stanley Park against St Peter's on 20th December 1879. Everton won 6-0!

Who founded Everton FC?

St. Domingo Methodist Church's new chapel was opened in 1871 and six years later, Rev.Ben Swift Chambers was appointed Minister. He was responsible for starting a cricket team for the youngsters in the parish. Because cricket can only be played in the summer, they had to find something to play during the other seasons as well. So a football club called St. Domingo F.C. was formed in 1878. Many people outside the parish were interested in joining the football club so it was decided that the name should be changed. In November 1879 at a meeting in the Queen's Head Hotel, the team name was changed to Everton Football Club, after the surrounding area.

Is Liverpool FC Catholic or Protestant?

Neither. There has never been a distinguising divide between the two halves of Liverpool. Brothers and Fathers from the same families have historically enjoyed competing against each other in derbies without any ill feeling toward each other, other then the thrill of victory, or the shame of defeat. Above all, both clubs were started as a result of a METHODIST church (St Domingo's). Both Protestantism and Catholocism were highly irrelevant to either football club. The fact that this question has been asked so many times since the Premiership started is probably down to rival fans making up rumours about the more successful clubs, as football became more popular amongst people who had previously no interest in it. Quote from Liverpool FC Website "Both teams (Everton & Liverpool FC) owe their existence to a Reverend Chambers of the then newly constructed and now totally demolished church - St Domingo, and to John Houlding - Tory MP and Mayor of Liverpool." Quote from Everton FC Website "The St Domingo Methodist Church Sunday School was opened in May 1870 and eight years later the football team using the St Domingo name played its first match in the south-east corner of Stanley Park, with the players carrying the posts from the park lodge on Mill Lane before fixing them into the metal sockets at either end of the crudely marked pitch. St Domingo's FC quickly established a local reputation for themselves and players were recruited from outside of the parish, precipitating a change of name in November 1879 - to EVERTON."
