It doesn't really matter to be honest. I'm 16 and play without a gum shield. I have bad teeth and have had since before I played rugby, and can't get a shield to properly fit me. It's all down to what your comfortable with but I would recommend Shock Doctor gum shields as they come with insurance if you break your teeth while wearing them and they will pay your dental bill. Hope this is of some help.
Most of the time dental damage can be prevented by wearing a good gum shield while practising sports, providing protection to your teeth and jaws. A gum shield can't always prevent damage totally, but in most cases it can dramatically diminish the extent of the damage. Opposing what many people think, not all gum shields are the same. The best protection is obtained with a custom made gum shield as recommended by experts. Ready made and 'boil and bite' mouthguards are not made to your mouth, do not fit exactly and therefore provide less protection. ---- Source: http://www.guardkit.com/en/toothinjury.asp
