A fraction is normally used to represent a value is less that 1. So if you have 1 of a number and then find something that is less than 1 of it, it is naturally going to be smaller. However, you can also have a fraction that is greater than 1, in which case the value multiplied will be greater than the original.

The absolute value of the number will be smaller

Why do you end up with a smaller fraction when you multiply a whole number by a fraction?

You do not!3 is a whole number, 7/3 is a fraction. If you multiply the whole number by the fraction you get 3*(7/3) = 7, which is larger not smaller.

Why does a number get smaller when you multiply by a proper fraction?

When you multiply a number by 1, it stays the same. When you multiply a number by a number greater than 1, it increases. When you multiply a number by a number that is less than 1 (a proper fraction), it decreases.

Why is the answer larger when you multiply a whole number by a whole number and smaller when you multiply a whole number by a proper fraction?

It is larger because the two whole numbers form a greater, larger number when multiplpied together. It is smaller when u multiply a whole number by a fraction because a fraction is a decimal and u get a smaller number when multiplying a number like 1/7 of 5

What will happen to a whole number when multiplied by a fraction smaller than 1?

You will get a number - whole or fraction - whose magnitude will be smaller than the original.

Can multiply any number with a proper fraction and the answer would get smaller than the number you started with?

Yes you can

Which fraction has the same value and look different?

The fraction that you get when you multiply the numerator and denominator of the original fraction both by the same number.

How do you write a mixed number to a fraction?

You multiply the denominator by the whole number, then add the numerator of the original fraction to get the numerator of your new fraction. The denominator stays the same as the original. Then you simplify into lowest terms.

What happens when you multiply a positive whole number by a fraction smaller than 1?

In that case, the result will be smaller than your positive whole number.

Why does a number get smaller when you multiply by a number less than one?

Because the number is decreasing in size (i.e. less than one) which means you are making it smaller. Try dividing a big number with any fraction. You'll see that it decreases. This is because a fraction is smaller than one and so it will decrease. Another way of looking at it is if you multiply a number by 1, you get the same number. Multiply by 2 and you get twice the number. Therefore, multiplying a number by less than one and your bound to get a smaller number.

Can a fraction and a whole number be divided?

Yes. If you mean dividing a whole number INTO a fraction here is how you do it. Take the whole number and write it as a fraction where the whole number is the numerator (top part of the fraction) and the number "1" is the denominator (the bottom part of the fraction). Now, turn that fraction upsides down so that the "1" is on top and the whole number is on the bottom. Multiply the numerator of the original fraction times the "1" giving you the original numerator as the new numerator. Multiply the whole number times the original denominator giving you the new denominator. If you means dividing the fraction into the whole number it is similar. Write the whole number as a fraction (as above) with 1 in the denominator. Then flip the fraction over and multiply the two numerators, the two denominators and you have your answer.

Why does the answer become smaller even though you multiply two franctions together?

Any number multiplied by a fraction yields a smaller product.
