Humans like to categorize things:

  • big, bigger, biggest
  • small, smaller, smallest
  • tall, taller, tallest
  • slim, slimmer, slimmest
  • wide, wider, widest
  • great, greater, greatest
  • loud, louder, loudest

However, HOW we categorize things is often arbitrary if we don't have comparisons.

Example:

I have the biggest hen you'd ever see!

But then, you come by to visit with your hen and it is bigger than mine.

So now yours becomes biggest and mine is bigger, but not bigger than yours.
