Why is the world series for baseball called the world series if it is just teams from North America playing?

The sport originated in North America. When it became time to declare a "champion" the big wigs who controlled Baseball deemed it "World Series" because at the time it was the only place where a professional series of baseball was played. The name just stuck ever since. At least now days the little league world series has it right!
