The human brain can judge distance merely by practice. A baby can't properly judge distance yet. Most people simply don't practice on vertical distances nearly as much as horizontal. Also, it's much harder to verify your judgment if you do try to practise.
the vertical dimension
Slope is the change in y (vertical dimension) with the change in x (horizontal dimension). On a Cartesian coordinate system, the slope is equal to infinity for change in x = 0, or a vertical line.
The dimensions, tolerances and so forth is either over a horizontal line, or to the left of a vertical.
"Landscape" orientation prints the page in such a way that in order to read it, you hold the paper with its longer dimension horizontal and its shorter dimension vertical.
Height (the vertical dimension of an object or person) is pronounced "hite" (rhymes with "bite").
Height or altitude.
The antonym of "vertical" (up and down measurement) is nonvertical. But the word horizontal can be considered the opposite in two-dimensional measurements, because it is the perpendicular dimension.

John F. Pepper has written: 'A review of literature on loss of vertical dimension'
THE BODY IS AT REST IN THE VERTICAL DIMENSION.
there are several different types of lines used in dimensional drawing, most are vertical and horizontal in design.
The word 'tall' is an adjective (great in vertical dimension; high in stature,) and a noun (garment size for a tall person).
