They are all connected. The nasopharynx is connected posterior
and inferiorly to the paranasal sinuses and is connected to the
middle ear by the auditory (Eustachian) tubes. The mucous membranes
of the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, and middle ear are all
connected by ducts. Infections can spread through all those
areas.
