When selecting an adequate trash liner, design is more critical than style. An effective trash liner will be designed to hold paper, food wastes, cans, bottles and liquids without tearing. That being said, trash can liners are available in different colors for individuals that desire color coordination to their trash receptacle or room furnishings. Some brands offer styles that are opaque and styles that are clear. The most common colors are black or green. Size, or volume capability, is another consideration. It is unwise to purchase a trash liner that is too small for the receptacle. If the bottom of the bag doesn't reach the bottom of the receptacle, the weight of the trash will eventually pull the liner into the bottom of the receptacle and collapse within. If the liner is too big, money is being wasted on liner space that will not be utilized. The only option to remedy a too-large liner is to remove it from the receptacle and leave it outside of the receptacle and continue to fill it. However, then the support of the receptacle is missing and the liner will sag or spill. At that point, the receptacle is useless and space is being utilized for two items with the same purpose. Most trash liners don't fit snugly around the receptacle. However, there are elasticized bands available in stores that are stretched around the overlapped top of the liner as it is overlapped around the rim of the receptacle. They hold the liner is place, preventing it from sagging within from the weight of the trash. Another consideration is how the liner is tied off or sealed when filled. Some liners utilize small wired twist ties that secure the bag. The plastic or paper enclosed ties are wrapped around the tightly closed liner top opening and twisted. Other liners are designed with a plastic draw-string around the top that closes the top and ties for a secure closing. Yet other liners are designed with an extra bit of material at the top strategically designed to be used to tie in a knot. That style is the most eco-friendly as it doesn't add more additional materials to be disposed of. The latest feature to be introduced in trash liners is pre-scented liners. They are designed with a fresh scent that offsets the malodorous trash. Alternatively, some liners have no discernible scent but contain an odorless chemical compound that neutralizes trash smells. There are even some trash liners that are bio-degradable.
