Há diferenças entre to lie (intransitivo) e to lay
(transitivo).
To lie (lay, lain, lying) significa "estar deitado", "jazer": he
was lying in bed when we arrived / ele estava deitado na cama
quando chegamos.
To lay (laid, laid, laying) significa "colocar sobre", "colocar
em posição horizontal": he laid fresh flowers on his mother's grave
/ ele colocou flores frescas no túmulo de sua mãe.
Existe também o verbo to lie (lied, lied, lying), que significa
"mentir": she lied about her age to be accepted by the group / ela
mentiu sobre sua idade para ser aceita pelo grupo.
