Football has become better because the football's used now are vastly superior than the much heavier model of 35-40 years ago.
Also the game is faster...football is heavily reliant on sheer skill, but speed is now a factor in the game though theres no point being quick if you don't have the god given talent that is skill...Ronaldo of Manchester United has this in abundance as the best football player in the world.
Players now run up to 14k in a 90 minute game...so endurance is a huge requirement..as well as skill. Carrying any excess weight you will burn out and wouldn't last 10 minutes especially in the EPL for example. The Brazilian Ronaldo gained weight and simply cannot cut it in football...there are no passengers.
