When an atomic bomb explodes it forms a mushroom cloud, the explosion gives off EMP or Electro Magnetic Pulse, the explosion is huge and can destroy so much for miles, and the explosion gives off huge amounts of radiation so if you survive the explosion you can suffer or die from the radiation after the bomb blew up.
square miles and radius have different units
The atomic bomb is an artefact, and so an invention. Maybe you meant to ask who invented the atomic bomb ?

the first atomic bomb leveled nothing. That was exploded at the Trinity test site. The first bomb used in war was at Hiroshima Japan, and pretty much destroyed everything in a 3 mile radius. That is just over 7 square miles.
Given the power of modern atomic bombs, it is unlikely that a single atomic bomb could destroy the world. It is doubtful that a single atomic bomb could cause irreparable damage to civilization (given humanity's spread across the planet etc)
Well there is no "Megaton" bombs, but there are hydrogen bombs in the megaton range and they are a lot more powerful. An Atomic bomb can destroy a city. A Hydrogen bomb can destroy a country.
