If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you may need a nasogastric (NG) tube inserted. A nasogastric tube goes through your nose into your stomach and can be used to feed,… give medications, treat bowel obstructions, or pump your stomach. The tube can help your IBS, treating a bowel obstruction by releasing gasses and fluids in your stomach. This also helps your abdomen shrink if it is distended. The NG will be hooked up to a suction machine to suck out the gasses and fluids; this can take several hours or days depending on how much fluid and gasses have to be sucked out. To learn more about these topics, read on.A nasogastric tube is plastic tubing that is inserted into your nose and goes down your esophagus and into your stomach. The tube is used to feed you, treat bowel obstructions, pump your stomach, or administer medication. This procedure takes a few minutes to perform. If you have IBS, an NG tube can help you get rid of an intestinal blockage by releasing gas and fluids in your stomach. The NG tube is hooked up to a suction machine and both the tube and the machine work to bring out the fluid and gas that are stuck in your stomach. This procedure also pushes down the bowel so it's not distended. This will make it easier for the obstruction to go away. You may feel more comfortable after having the tube in, since the painful gasses that were building up have escaped. After having the NG tube in, doctors can treat your bowel obstruction. It depends on how long it takes for the fluids and gasses to be brought out. The process could take from several hours to two or three days. Once the tube is taken out, doctors will either put you on a low-fiber diet until the obstruction clears up by itself or remove the obstruction with surgery. Usually, if your bowel is partially obstructed, the obstruction will clear up on its own. If you have a completely obstructed bowel or it doesn't clear up by itself, surgery is usually the only option. When you have a nasogastric tube put in, it's a very uncomfortable experience. The tube can be difficult to pass through your nose and may hurt going down your throat. When the tube is ready to be inserted, you will be instructed to lie down. Then while the tube is being moved from your nose into your stomach, you will be told to move your head, neck, or parts of your body to help the tube slide down easier. When the tube is being moved into your stomach, you may feel like you want to cough or throw up.When you have IBS, you might require an NG tube to relieve a bowel obstruction. The tube is inserted into your nose and goes down to your stomach. It is hooked up to a suction machine that sucks out the gasses and fluids that are building up in your stomach due to the obstruction. While it is uncomfortable for the time that you are using it, the NG tube will relieve the painful pressure that builds in your abdomen during a bowel obstruction. Keep this article in mind if you need to prepare for NG tube insertion.Doctors or nurses can give you an oral aesthetic to help the tube slide down easier. They can also use a lubricant to help with insertion. This will make it more comfortable for you. (MORE)

Kae Sa Luk, the ancient art of Thai fruit carving, transforms fruit and vegetables to create a feast for the eyes. Fruit carvings can range from delicate edible garnishes to …large, elaborate sculptures. When done skillfully, Thai fruit carving is a truly spectacular accompaniment to a special Thai meal.Fruit carving is an art that has been practiced in Thailand for centuries. A wide variety of fruits and vegetables are painstakingly carved into abstract patterns or pleasing natural forms, such as birds, animals, and flowers. The carvings are often intricate and made colorful by carving to varying depths to display the contrast of colors between the peel, rind, and flesh of the same fruit.Thai fruit carving is said to have originated during the 14th century in the historical Thai capital of Sukhothai. During the lunar festival of Loi Krathong the king's royal consort, Nang Noppharat, created an elaborate carving to include in the ceremony of floating displays. Originally an art restricted to ladies of the royal court, in modern days, fruit carving is taught in Thai primary schools in order to preserve the skill.Fruits and vegetables are easiest to carve if they have relatively firm flesh that will retain its shape, but are not too hard to carve easily. A smooth surface and uniform shape also produce a pleasing appearance. Any type of fruit or vegetable can be used, but popular choices include watermelons, pumpkins, mangoes, and papayas. Garnishes are often carved from pieces of peeled fruit and vegetables, like slices of carrot. There are numerous highly specialized tools for fruit carving, but to begin it is most important to have a small, sharp knife with a pointed tip. It is best if the knife is lightweight, or your hand will become fatigued over time. Fruit carving knives come in a variety of sizes and shapes: some straight, some with slightly slightly curved blades, and some with crinkle cut patterns. Other tools include peelers, melon ballers, and coring tools.Try these [simple leaves made of pineapple and watermelon](http://recipes.answers.com/recipe/1196437/thai-fruit-carving-a-simple-leaf#slide=1) and check out these [tips for beginning fruit carving](http://recipes.answers.com/article/1196462/six-tips-for-thai-fruit-carving-success). Once you have mastered some basic forms, you'll be ready to use your imagination to create some patterns of your own. If you are ready to tackle more advanced carvings, you may wish to buy a book about Thai fruit carving, or even visit Thailand and take a fruit carving class to hone your skills.Even a very basic fruit carving can add a note of artistry to your plate. Fruit carving is a beautiful, fun way to express your creativity in a way that will enhance your next Thai meal. (MORE)
A common misconception that people have is presuming that all gas appliances use the same type of fuel; however, two types of gas exist for home appliances: natural gas (NG) a…nd liquid propane (LP). Both NG and LP are perfectly safe when the proper appliance is installed correctly to the proper fuel type. Problems arise when a gas appliance isn't connected to the proper gas type. It's vital to understand the differences between the two types of fuels for two reasons: one, when purchasing an appliance and two, for the safety of your home once the appliance is installed.NG is a mixture of a variety of gases and propane is one of them. It's usually always stored and delivered in a gas state. Propane is separated from NG during a refining process. LP is stored in tanks of all sizes at a high pressure. This high pressure in turn liquefies the propane. When a LP tank's valve is opened, the change in pressure turns the propane from a liquid into a gas. The difference in pressure between the two gases is what causes the danger when installing a gas appliance to the wrong fuel type.Because NG is at a lower pressure than LP, the orifices within a NG ready appliance (nozzles that control the gas flow) must be larger to allow enough gas to exit through them. When a NG ready appliance is fed LP, the higher pressurized LP spews out of the larger orifices creating a much larger, dangerous flame; far too large for any reasonable use. This applies to any gas appliance like clothes dryers, ranges, and cooktops.Connecting an NG appliance to LP doesn't have the same dangerous flame creation as a LP appliance connected to NG. In fact the lack of pressure in the NG line can't effectively power a LP ready appliance. Symptoms of a NG appliance connected to LP can be very low flames or none at all making cooking food or drying clothes impossible. The first step is to check your utility bills for areas listing NG or LP usage. Remember that propane is delivered and stored via tanks not through a ground line like NG. If you have a large tank on the outside of your home and a truck comes to fill that tank, then you have LP. Check the information plate on your gas appliances. This plate lists the model number, serial number, and fuel type of the appliance. If you still aren't sure, contact your local gas company or a certified contractor to inspect your home. Most gas appliances are already set to run on NG; however most can be converted to accept LP. This involves installing a conversion kit that contains the proper orifices to match the pressure of the fuel type. If a fuel conversion is needed, double-check that the kit is included with the appliance as some manufacturers provide these kits as an accessory for a separate fee. A fuel conversion is a simple process for a qualified technician and many retailers perform this conversion for you; however, do expect a fee for this service.Unfortunately, not all appliances can be converted from one fuel to another and these models must be ordered specifically NG or LP ready. Informing your salesperson of your gas type at the beginning of the sales process eliminates the hassle of navigating through slight model number changes and conversion options, and keeps you focused on finding the correct gas appliance for your needs.According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Americans consumed 25.46-trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2012. Yes, trillion. While NG and LP are both common fuels, making sure to pair the correct appliance with the correct gas type is vital for an easy and safe installation. Be sure to communicate what fuel you need to your salesperson to ensure a smooth purchase and always consult with a trained professional when handling anything involving the installation of a gas appliance. The Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands, of which about 4,000 are inhabited. The entirety of the islands?populated and uninhabited?comprise what is known as the Philippine…s Archipelago. Located in the Pacific Rim of southeast Asia, just northwest of Malaysia, the Philippines is in a region of substantial volcanic activity. It also has major fault lines running under most of the nations, making the region prone to earthquakes as well. The majority of the islands, even the inhabited ones, are relatively small in geographic size and in population. Just 11 islands make up the bulk of the nation's landmass and population disbursement. However, because the country stretches a significant distance, particularly from the north to the south, the Philippines geography, terrain, and climate vary significantly from one region to the next.Though technically located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, the Philippines is surrounded by several different bodies of water. More than 22,500 miles of coastline run adjacent to six main bodies of water, though there are numerous smaller seas and straits that encompass the waters between many of the interior islands as well. The Pacific Ocean only surrounds the northernmost regions of the nation. To the east is the Philippine Sea, to the west-central, the South China Sea, and to the southwest, the Sulu Sea. The Celebes Sea surrounds the southernmost islands. There are also several notable bays?including Manila Bay?as well as two major gulfs in the south: Davao and Moro.Manila is the capital of the nation and is located in the northwestern central region of the Philippines archipelago. The city is situated centrally on the coast of the Manila Bay, on the island of Luzon. Manila, along with 15 other cities, make up the a region known as Metro Manila, which is considered the national capital region. Although it has a population approaching two million, the city of Manila encompasses less than 15 square miles.Luzon is the largest of the islands, encompassing a little over 40,540 square miles. It also has the largest population, approaching 50 million. Mindanao, the nation's second largest island, stretches nearly 36,680 square miles, with a population of approximately 2 million. As the northernmost and largest island in the country, and the seat of the national capital, Luzon has more urban centers than does Mindanao, which is a primary reason for the differences in population density. The Philippines is generally classified as a wet, tropical or marine-tropical climate. However, because the islands stretch so far, the climate varies from one region to the next. The whole of the Philippines is subject to the affects of multiple climate conditions, including ocean currents and air streams. Due to its proximity to the equator, the Philippines is also subject to the unique affects of the inter-tropical convergence zone. This is an area in which the collision of northern and southern air masses can create a range of more volatile weather conditions, including cyclones, typhoons, and other tropical storms. Rain is more prevalent in some regions of the nation than in others, with topography and proximity to both the equator and the coastlines playing major parts in each region's rainy and dry seasons. Most of the islands feature narrow plains in the coastal regions as well as plentiful, sandy beaches. There are few large rivers, but many smaller, unnavigable ones as well as numerous streams throughout all the islands. Tropical rainforests were once common, but deforestation has transformed almost every island, with the notable exception of Palawan, which remains relatively undeveloped. Some lowland rainforests are still present throughout the islands, with the largest tracts remaining on Palawan, Lupon, and Mindanao. Montane rainforests are significantly less common, but several larger forests do still exist in the mountainous regions on the same three islands. All of the islands of the Philippines are subject to earthquakes due to the extensive and complex Philippine Fault System, which runs under the whole of the Philippines Archipelago. The Philippines are also part of the western arc system in the Pacific, or the area known as the "Ring of Fire," which is a region in which active volcanoes are numerous. The Philippine Islands were formed by volcanic eruptions, and there are in fact four volcanoes that have been frequently active in the contemporary period of Filipino history: Mount Mayon and Mount Pinatubo on the island of Luzon; Taal, which is located on Volcano Island in the center of Lake Taal, just south of Manilla, also on Luzon; and Mount Apo, on the southern island of Mindanao. With more than 7,100 total islands and more than 4,000 inhabited ones, the Philippines features an impressive range of terrain and climatic conditions. The Philippines geography makes it a region prone to volcanic activity and earthquakes as well as other natural disasters, especially those associated with tropical storms. However, the region is also home to a beautiful array of geographic features, which include extensive mountain ranges, highlands, and valleys as well as inland and coastal plains, and plentiful sandy beaches. The geographic center of the Philippines is traditionally believed to be located on the island of Marinduque, which has been used as the reference point for the creation of all national maps since the early 20th century. However, the expansion of Filipino marine boundaries in 1970 further into the South China Sea, affected the nation's official geographic center. Marinduque may be culturally relevant, and is perhaps the center of the landmass of the Philippines, but the true geographic center of the nation's holdings?land and marine?falls within the Sibuyan Sea, between the islands of Marindugue and Romblon. (MORE)
