Well, one thing that definitely defined people back then was religion. Everything people did had to be in sync with the religious dogmas of the time. They weren't allowed to question (at least not openly) what is the origin of things and why they function the way they do, which brought to a major setback as far as the development of science goes (for example medicine -hygiene was poor because they did not believe it to be crucial for preventing illnesses because illness was interpreted, among other interpretations, as a punishment for one's sins).

What is the dark ages?

In general, the term "Dark Ages" refers to a period of intellectual darkness and economic regression. The most widely known such period in western civilization is the Middle Ages, or the Early Middle ages, depending on how you approach the history. There have been other such period of regression in other regions at other times, and these, too, have been characterized as dark ages. The most widely known from antiquity is the Greek "dark ages' that fell between the period of Minoan civilization and the later, classic Greek Civilization. The term is intended to draw a contrast between periods of "light" before and after the dark period. For the European Dark Ages, the light period before is the Roman Empire and the light period after is the Reawakening, or Renaissance. The European Middle Ages are considered to run from the 5th to the 15th centuries, and the Early Middle Ages from the 5th to the 10th centuries. While the term "Dark Ages" continues in popular use, historians of the 20th century have been less and less inclined to use the term because of increasing knowledge of accomplishments that occurred during that period and the negative connotations of the word "dark" in contrast to the preceding and following periods of "light."

What is a more appropriate historical title for the medieval time period AD 500 to 1500 the Middle Ages or the Dark Ages?

The Middle Ages. "Dark Ages" was invented by people living in the later Renaissance period, because they thought that living in a time without the benefit of the knowledge and full appreciation of the art and philosophiy of ancient Rome an Greece meant that you were 'living in the dark'. In reality, there was nothing 'dark' about the middle ages. It was a period full of development and discovery. "Middle" Ages simply indicates that this was the period between Antiquity and Renaissance.

What was the era before the dark ages?

The Renaissance time period came after the Dark Ages. ----- It seems most people who use the term Dark Ages are talking about the Early Middle Ages, which is a period from about 450 AD to 1000 AD. They call the following period the Middle Ages. Some people would have the Dark Ages coincide with the Age of Migration, from about 300 to 700, and this would mean it was followed by the second half of the Early Middle Ages, which began with a time called the Carolingian Renaissance. Other people would have the Dark Ages be equal to the entire Middle Ages, so it would be followed by the European Renaissance. I think most historians do not use the term Dark Ages.
