They were nothing like as fancy as they are now. They did not have the big screen TV displays they have now. They had grids made of light bulbs that could display digits and circuitry that would automatically add one to a score and could reset with a click of a button.
For Basketball they had lights that would show the number of fouls. The players names were displayed by putting up painted cards with one letter on each.
Busch Stadium had a huge neon display that would show an eagle flapping its wings and flying
around the scoreboard. The line score and the scores of other games were put up by a man inside the scoreboard who had a supply of cards with digits on them.
