Usually, new found data that contradicts a scientific theory isn't enough to discount the entire theory. Scientific theories get formed after many data by many people that support its formation. So one disagreeing datum or "evidence" usually won't disprove it.
Another way to understand this: a scientific theory is a lot like a person's reputation. A reputation gets formed by many actions & deeds (many studies and experiments). So one contradictory statement (someone saying the opposite thing about them) will not and should not change their entire reputation.
However, it's not that simple (with theories or reputations). The weakening or abandonment of a theory (or reputation) also depends on who found the contradictory data (the people doing the experiments), and the strength of that data. Depending on who is saying it and what they are saying, a theory can be strongly weakened and in rare cases even disproved. Just as an expert or a very believable person can discredit someone's reputation.
theory or fact that of course is influenced by a theory
