Standing on the driver side, looking under the center intake manifold; you will see a round black object with a 10mm or 12mm bolt in the center, which is the knock sensor.
the knock sensor is located under the intake manifold, with a flash light you can see it however you have to remove the intake manifold to replace the knock sensor , also you will need to replace the intake gasket set as well!

I really depends on the engine. On the 4 cylinder 2.4 ltr engine, it is on the block near the oil filter.
It is on the right side of the motor when you are facing the radiator. You will need a #10 socket and a swivel head and a long extension. I recommend you change the connector piece and the wire when you are changing the knock sensor to get maximum performance.
You can find a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder knock sensor picture in most auto repair manuals. Most Nissan dealerships repair centers will provide you with a picture of the sensor.

Th knock sensor on a 2002 Nissan Xterra 3.3 is located on the top of the engine. It is mounted under the engine intake.
If just the knock sensor need to be replaced. I would say no more than $150.00

ohm it out at the connector on the right side of the engine. if it is no continuity it is bad. it has very high ohms though so you need a good meter.

On my 1995 the Knock sensor is located under the plenum and intake manifold on top of the middle of the block.
The knock sensor for most Nissan V6 engines is located directly under the intake manifold. So to replace it, you have to remove the intake manifold. Good Luck.
