The check engine light is the light shaped like an engine, or the light that states Check Engine (Soon). If this light comes on, it is time to see what the issue is with the engine.

I assume it is the same as the 1998 Ford Explorer four door : There is a " CHECK GAGE " light ( just to the left and above the tachometer ) The light comes on if the engine coolant temperature is too HIGH , the engine oil pressure is too LOW , or the gas gauge is at or near empty
No ,the check engine light indicates a trouble code. Have the truck scanned, it is the fastest way to diagnose the problem.
If the check engine light is blinking , an engine cylinder misfire has been detected
If the warn. light in question is the 'check engine' light, this means there is a problem with the vehicle's ergonomic system, such as an oxygen sensor, etc.
On a 1998 Ford Explorer ( like my 1995 ) Either your engine coolant temperature is too high , your engine oil pressure is too low , or your fuel gauge is at or near empty ( any of those 3 things will turn on the " check gage " warning light )
It allows the OBD II scanner to connect to your Ford Explorer to " read " any trouble codes when the check engine light comes on for one thing
High idle, misfire, check engine light,High idle, misfire, check engine light,
An engine misfire has been detected
the check engine light flashing on any car means that there is a very strong miss fire that could damage the catalytic converter.the check engine light flashing on any car means that there is a very strong miss fire that could damage the catalytic converter.
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
