Does it sound like the car is getting compression when you turn it over? No spark may be because the distributor cap is way off. Timing could be gone. Ignition coil may need to be replaced. I would suggest searching in www.vwvortex.com in the JettaIII section or the 2.0L section and see what you can find.
Even though you replaced the coil, it may be bad. You should test that first. If the coil is okay, it could be that the ignition wires need to be replaced.
its is you tachnometer that needs to be reseated or replaced.
When disassembling a Jetta mirror the piece must be removed from the vehicle by unscrewing the mounting screws. When off the mirror can be detached and clean, or replaced for a bigger unit.
I replaced mine the other day- it is under/behind the alternator.

On a VW Jetta 1999 the ABS light won't turn off. Does the ABS system needs servicing or is it a sensor that needs to be replaced?
60,000 miles you should have it checked to see if it needs replacing.
