The Importance of RAM and Memory Upgrades for Gaming And Everyday Use?

When people are looking to buy a new computer, they generally will buy one that is within their price and worry about upgrades at a later date. One of the most common upgrades for a person to do to their computer is a memory upgrade. Memory is what allows the computer to complete the many tasks that a person does on their computer. Without enough memory, the computer will freeze up when there are too many programs running. Desktop computers will have a minimum of 2GB of RAM, but most will have 4GB already installed. This amount of memory is sufficient for people that use the computer for typing, surfing the web and other tasks that do not use very much memory. One of the main reasons that a person needs to upgrade the memory on their computer is that they want to play games. The more modern games require a minimum of 6GB of RAM, a compatible graphics card and a powerful processor. For new games such as First Person Shooters, users will need at least a quad-core processor and a graphics card with 1GB to 2GB dedicated video memory. Without meeting these requirements, users will not be able to play their games at their full potential. Perhaps the best way to ensure that a computer can handle certain games is to build the computer from scratch. By building a computer, users are guaranteed that their system will have all of the proper components to handle their games. The most important components to focus on are the processor and the memory. Without a good processor, it does not matter how much memory a person has installed. The processor uses the RAM to process tasks quicker and without any delay. The best way to ensure that the processor and RAM work well together is to buy a bundle that has the processor and the RAM together. Overall, a computer memory upgrade is one of the easiest ways to get some extra speed out of a computer, but it may not be the best way to speed up the computer. Before buying a computer, it is important to know how much RAM can be installed and what type of processor is in the computer.

What is an L2 cache and is 6 MB good?

An L2 cache is a small amount of RAM built directly into the processor. This memory is faster than the main system memory. It is used so that the processor doesn't have to fetch data from main memory as often, and thus making many tasks on the computer, such as video games and editing faster. A 6 MB L2 cache is considered good by today's standards.

Is a single core processor as fast as a dual core 1.8 with the same memory?

Yes, and no. A 1.8 Ghz processor will process things at... 1.8 Ghz. A dual core processor will process things at 1.8Ghz. A dual core, however, can process many different things at the same time alot easier and efficiently then a single core processor can. For games, applications, ect, if the program can be multithreaded, then you will see a huge increase in computing speeds for the program. As for games, anything more then 2.6 Ghz is not needed. The extra money needed to bump up from a 1.8 Ghz processor to, say, a 2.8 Ghz, would be more then enough money to buy you a much better processor.

Is 1.7ghz processor play video games?

If the processor you are referring to is only a single core, than most likely not. If you plan on playing more modern games, then you would want to definitely upgrade to a better processor. But if you are planning on using it for older games or online games, then it would work just fine.
