A CD-R cannot be erased, once media is put on it, it cannot be taken off, but a CD-RW can be erased and resotred as many times as you want.

The "r" in the DVD-r means that the disc can only be recorded once. If using a DVD-RW the "rw" means that the disc can be erased and used time and time again. Hence "r" for record, and "rw" for read/write. hope this helps!
