Vatican City is a sovereign city state located within the Italian city of Rome, and is recognised as a sovereign state by 176 countries.

It has its own laws, is not subject to any other country, and issues passports in its own sovereign right which are internationally recognised and accepted. It issues its own coins. Its government has revenue from investments and income from visitors. It has its own education system.

Vatican City has its own police force, which, for historic reasons, are all male and are Swiss citizens.

Its ruler is the Pope, an elective position. After election, he has legislative, executive, and judicial power. Vatican City has its own government and its own Prime Minister, who is not the pope!

Under international law, the land within Vatican City's boundaries is recognised as its own national territory. No other state, country or sovereignty has sovereign power over Vatican City or its territory.

Ambassadors of the Holy See are citizens of Vatican City, and it has diplomatic relations with most countries of the world.

Vatican City has 'independent country' status.
