Any sound waves that happen to be propagating through the water will bounce

off of any objects that are there. No device is required to make that happen.

A system that intentionally generates sound waves underwater, and then receives

and analyzes those that return after bouncing off of something in the water, is a

SONAR system.

What did scientist use to map the ocean floor?

sonar - by bouncing sound signals off the bottom of the ocean, they were able to map the depth of the ocean. Deep sea diving would take too long. Satellites were not in orbit until the 1970's and submarines were not necessary since sonar could be done from the surface on a boat.
