A disease that cannot be spread is also known as a non-infectious disease. This is a disease that may be caused by the environment (e.g. skin cancer from radiation from the Sun), or lack of food (e.g. scurvy from lack of Vitamin C), genetic disorders, or any source other than an infection. They can also be caused by drugs and carcinogens (cancer-causing agents).

Non-Infectious Diseases cannot be spread from person to person as in infectious disease, but can be passed down genetically in some cases. It is important to note that non-infectious diseases are not caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites; diseases caused by these organisms are infectious diseases.

Examples of non-infectious diseases include:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes mellitus type 2
  • Down syndrome
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Anorexia nervosa

Legionella pneumophila and other related bacteria cannot spread from person to person, they grow in contaminated water and people inhale or ingest them accidentally to get infected.

There are also many bacteria that cause no illness in humans and cannot live on or in the human body that obviously cannot spread from person to person (e.g. extremophilic bacteria from hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean or in scalding hot springs on land).

Some disease causing bacteria that need intermediate hosts cannot be spread from person to person directly.
