A chain store is simply a string or group of retail outlets. Chain stores could sell virtually anything from groceries to fast food to dry goods, but these stores are generally supplied from large warehouses to reduce overhead and increase the buying power of the chain's purchasing agents.

Chain restaurants are eating establishments that are typically franchised and in large number. For instance, Red Robin and Chili's are chains. When you hear chain when speaking of restaurants just think of the names and locations that you see many of these buildings while driving. Some say chain's are not the way to go since their food is basically - fast food. Try a non-chain - you might be surprised.

Any kind of food chain means it is a franchise, with each franchise having different managers, with the chains being spread across the country or a certain part of the country.
