A liquid differs from a gas because the particles of a liquid will not disperse to fill the entirety of the container it is held in as it maintains its density fairly consistently. Like gases, liquids have no fixed shape.

Liquids can free form to whatever shape the space around them is, but it only has a definite amount of space it can take up. Solids cannot change their shape and cannot expand to a bigger volume of space. Gases are able to free form their shape to whatever is around them and are also able to expand to whatever volume of space is around them. I could go a lot more into detail if needed but that was just a quick comparison.
