That depends on wether you are using the Imperial (inches) system or the Metric System

1 Inch equates to about 2.5cm however in engineering you need to go smaller than inches or Centimeters (10 millimeters)

This is where Micrometers come in these measuring devices can go down to very exacting measurements :-

Some micrometers are provided with a vernier scale on the sleeve in addition to the regular graduations. These permit measurements within 0.001 millimetre to be made on metric micrometers, or 0.0001 inches on inch-system micrometers.

beyond that measurements go down to Nanometers :-

a metric unit of length equal to one ten billionth of a meter (or 0.0001 micron); used to specify wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation.
