Is the pharynx. It divides into the larynx (voice-box) which is in front and goes to the lungs and the esophagus which is in the back and goes to the stomach. The epiglottis in pharynx can cover up the larynx to direct food into the esophagus but never covers up the pharynx to direct air (hence swallowing air for intentional burping) and sometimes fails to protect the larynx (hence choking).
