What were the Panic Wars?
They were called Punic Wars, not Panic Wars. They were three wars fought between Rome and Carthage (264-41 BC, 218-201 BC and 149-146 BC)_. The first one was over the control of Sicily. The Romans won and seized western Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica from Carthage. In the Second War the Carthaginian general Hannibal invaded Italy and routed the armies of the Romans and their allies three times, but the he lost. This war was also fought in the Carthaginian territories in southern Spain which Rome took over by defeating the Carthaginians there as well. The third war was fought because Rome wanted to destroy Carthage.
Why was it necessary to have three Punic wars?
Ancient Rome and its rival Carthage fought three major wars. The first war began in 264 BC BCE and ended in 241 BC BCE. The cause of that war was when Rome felt threatened because its desire to occupy Sicily had Carthage and her Greek allies in the way in manner of speaking. Carthage had no intentions of helping Rome gain more power or influence in the Mediterranean Sea and in Sicily. Rome declared war on Carthage and after a long struggle won the war. In 218 BC BCE to 202 BC BCE, Carthage attempted to reinforce her position in western Spain. To insure this a brave general of Carthage led his troops over the Alps and attacked Roman legions in the Italian Peninsula. It was another long and bloody struggle which Rome won. The third war began in 149 BC BCE to146 BC BCE Carthage attempted a small extension of its power in Africa. Rome retaliated by leveling Carthage and ending any future wars with their former rival.
