Since industrial, there have been various types of semi-true metal, which I never include on lists like these. Obviously those genres have subgenres, but those are very hard to pinpoint in time.
This question is far too broad, especially since the definitions of genres and sub-genres are often subjective and/or debatable. Perhaps the best way to answer this is to just begin listing and see what develops. This may take some time:
Classical
Country
Rock
Jazz
1. Acid jazz
2. Cool jazz
3. Free-form jazz
4. Hot jazz
Blues
Rap/Hip Hop
1. Alternative rap
2. East Coast
3. Gangsta rap
4. Hyphy
5. Third coast (southern U.S.)
6. Trip hop
7. West Coast
Electronic
1. House
2. Happy hard core
3. Trance
4. Ambient
5. Break beat
There is no set number. Every time some band comes along and critics think they're something new and exciting, another subgenre magically appears.
