My 96 Accord light shift bulb is located right under the shift signs. However, to get to it, you have to take out your whole center manifold, including every thing from compartment to ash tray. There are lots of screws holding it down so good luck finding them all. After that you'll take the shifter sign (held down by four screws) off then I believe right to one side of whats below that is a tiny green bulb, that you'll need to replace.

It's possible that the cause is a blown-out, center (3rd) brake light. I have a 1994 Accord EX. Same thing happend to me. Annoying!!!! It's a safety feature designed to "force" you to replace the bulb when it dies. Hope this helped.
