The clear meaning of the surrounding verses indicates it was on one particular day in creation week. Verse one of Genesis 1 is a verse which summarizes all that is to follow. The details are contained in each verse, where the particular acts of creation are recorded. -- IF there is a GOD then it was created in 4004BC. But that does not make sense as carbon dating puts many artifacts found much older than 6000 years. The Earth itself according to scientific community is the billions of years old. What a difference.

The universe is 13 billion years old. Our Solar system is 4.5 billion. This reference of years goes back farther then recorded time of course. And we wouldn't refer to the Big Bang as occurring 13 billion BC or BCE (before current events). God and science are not mutually exclusive. You can't have one without the other some people believe.

Another answer:

Some people believe that the universe was created in 6000 BC (and Adam and Eve in 4000 BC). Note that God could have created a universe in that year in which the big bang had already occurred billions of years earlier.
