∙ 13y agoActiveX is a Microsoft technology that allowed programmers to include rich, dynamic user controls into a static web page, long before the concepts of Java, Flash, and DHTML became popular.
Due to numerous security concerns, ActiveX is widely considered to be a threat and is actively blocked by some IT departments. ActiveX was also effectively blocked due to a patent infringement lawsuit.
Even despite these observations, it is more importantly considered obsolete by many, due to the emerging technologies that have come to replace it, including Silverlight, Gears, Java, and Flash.
