The utilization, recycling process to make it useable or effective use of waste discharged by house holds or industries in the form of solid is called as solid waste management.

Waste management in general is the systematic gathering, separation of waste from useful components and then the disposal of the residual material by incineration or containment in a properly designed disposal site.

TERMINOLOGY - SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENTSolid waste is material, which is not in liquid form, and has no value to the person who is re-sponsible for it. Although human or animal ex-creta often ends up in the solid waste stream, generally the term solid waste does not include such materials. Synonyms to solid waste are terms such as "garbage", "trash", "refuse" and "rubbish".

The term municipal solid waste, refers to solid wastes from houses, streets and public places, shops, offices, and hospitals, which are very often the responsibility of municipal or other governmental authorities. Solid waste from in-dustrial processes are generally not considered "municipal" however they need to be taken into account when dealing with solid waste as they often end up in the municipal solid waste stream.

Wastewater management is the process by which all waste water (waste from showers, toilets, sinks, both residential and most commercial) is treated and returned back to a receiving stream.

Generally this consists of several steps; pretreatment (this occurs for some commercial producers that must treat water before sending it to the municipal treatment), preliminary treatment (this step removes rags, debris, grit, rocks, and other nonorganic material), primary treatment, secondary treatment, final treatment, and various methods of solids extraction (i.e. belt filter press, land application, composting, etc...).
