I believe it is because they don't want to bond. They are both metals and have a positive charge; they repel each other. This is just my guess. If you heat both of the pure substances up in an oxygen rich environment you may get a bright surprise though. ~James

Aluminum does react, with a great many things. If what you're asking is why aluminum doesn't rust, the answer is that aluminum does oxidize, just like iron does; only aluminum oxide forms a hard 'shell' that coats the outside of the aluminum, preventing further oxidation. Iron oxide, on the other hand, flakes away from iron, and so exposes a fresh layer which then becomes oxidized in turn., which will eventually itself flake off, and the process continues.

Aluminium is in fact extremely reactive. It appears not to be because as soon as aluminum metal is exposed, it undergoes oxidation with oxygen in the air and turns into aluminum oxide. This forms a protective layer which prevents the rest of the aluminum from being attacked.
