rational expression
An expression which contains polynomials in both the numerator and denominator.
Rational expressions are fractions and are therefore undefined if the denominator is zero; the domain of a rational function is all real numbers except those that make the denominator of the related rational expression equal to 0. If a denominator contains variables, set it equal to zero and solve.
The difference between these two is that an expression only contains variables, numbers, and mathematical symbols, and an equation contains two expression with an equal sign that separate them. For example, while an expression is "2x-1", an equation is "2x-1 = 5x."
Writing Mixed Numbers as FractionsThis mixed number can also be expressed as a fraction. Each whole apple contains two half apples. Your two whole apples are also four half apples. Four half apples plus one half apple is five half apples. So you have 5/2 apples. To put this another way: to turn a mixed number into a fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator (the bottom part), and add the result to the numerator (the top part).21/2 = ?Multiply the whole number by the denominator. The whole number is 2.The denominator is 2.2 x 2 = 4.Add the result to the numerator:The numerator is 1.4 + 1 = 5The numerator is 5. The denominator remains 2.21/2 = 5/2
An equation
An expression which contains polynomials in both the numerator and denominator.
rational expression
If there is a common factor between the numerator and the denominator, you can eliminate it. Otherwise, there is usually not much to simplify.
It is a compound fraction.
That's a complex fraction.
That's a complex fraction.
-16m + 71 = 0Subtract 71 from both sides of the equation.-16m = -71Divide the whole equation by -16.m = 71/16The negative in the numerator and the negative in the denominator cancel each other leaving the final product positive.
The usage of polynomials in real life include mathematical models for the stock market, roller coaster designs, rocket trajectories, and in engineering for high and machine designs. A polynomial is a mathematical expression that contains exponents, variables, and constants.
There are infintely many posibilities: Any expression that contains (y-4) or a multiple of it in the denominator. Also, the following trigonometric functions: An expression that contains arcsin(x/y) where abs(x) < 4 Similarly arccos Corresponding conditions for arccosec and arcsec.
