How is the more useful question. Why might be useful in some contexts (Why is my equipment not functioning? Answer: It is not plugged in.] The danger is that the question why can lead you down many dead ends. It is more likely that how will lead you to explore what is properly within the paradigm of science.

Lumbar stenosis, also known as "lumbar spinal stenosis," is a condition in which the spinal cord and related nerves are compressed by narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar vertebrae, which are in the lower back. The condition can cause numbness, pain, weakness or poor coordination in any limb or extremity below the lumbar area, as well as loss of bladder or bowel control. The causes of lumber stenosis are similar to the causes of thoracic and cervical stenosis. The only distinction is the part of the spine in which the compression of the spinal cord occurs.

The spinal cord is the primary conduit for communication between the brain and limbs. The spinal cord travels through the "spinal canal," which is a series of openings in the vertebrae that make up the spine. The spinal cord is cushioned by soft tissue around the vertebrae within the canal.

A variety of different health problems can cause lumbar stenosis. These problems can be congenital (occurring from birth) or acquired. Some acquired forms result from trauma, while others are associated with other diseases. Because lumbar stenosis produces symptoms that are similar to vascular claudication, which results from poor circulation in the legs, it can be difficult to diagnose.

Puncture of the soft tissue that surrounds the spinal column in the vertebrae, known as a "herniated disc," is a common cause of lumbar stenosis. It can result from twisting movements, which put higher stress on the spine than other bending movements and thus cause the puncture. Another common cause is "spondylolisthesis," also commonly called a "slipped disc," which occurs when one of the discs of the lumbar region moves out of alignment from the others, causing pressure on the spinal cord. Often, lumbar stenosis is caused by degenerative aging diseases, including osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, development of bone spurs, and thickening of ligaments.

There are a variety of treatments for lumbar stenosis. Treatment usually begins with physical therapy, pain control medication, and some restrictions on movements related to the back and spine. In some cases, corticosteroid injections are used to reduce inflammation. If symptoms persist or worsen, surgery is sometimes necessary to remove material that is impinging on the spine.
