Is a Maltese a good dog for a 12 year old girl?

It all depends on if your getting it as a puppy or as an adult. If you get a puppy, you can train it to be good with kids by having the kids around it a lot. If you get an adult, it might have trouble with kids already. That is not impossible to teach out of a dog but it will take tons of work.

Do Maltese dogs do well with children? As a general rule, yes.

BUT (and this is a big "but"), any dog, any breed, can interact poorly with children.

If you are looking at getting a Maltese, I would recommend going to a local breed rescue, especially one which uses a fostering system (where the dog is kept with a Foster family, until someone requests the dog). With a Fostering system, the Foster family gets to know the personality of the dog, and how it behaves in various situations. This way, you can be pretty sure that a specific dog will do well with children.

I believe the Maltese is a good choice of dog breed. I owned one, but it died at the age of 17. Maltese are a loving breed. The Maltese came from the island of Malta, where kings and queens could have a lap dogs. When the breed came to America their coat was admired by the people of America. I believe the Maltese is a very good breed to chose from!

Well, if your like me and hate big dogs then yes you also have to consider how much time your going to have to groom them and play. You may have to treat their yapping issues too.

I have a westie. And I have to say all small dogs can be a little nippy. But they are great! Just make sure you watch for signs of annoyance.
