It is against the law to own a Pit Bull Terrier in the UK. UK authorities judge a dog's breed based on physical appearance, so any dog that looks like a Pit Bull Terrier is banned.
If you own a banned dog in the UK, the police or dog wardens have the power to remove it, even if there have been no complaints and the dog is perfectly behaved.
You need a lisence to keep a pitbull in the UK. If you don't have a lincense and someone finds out and tells the police you could have your pitbull taken away and get a fine or be put in jail.
Hope this helps.
how do you get a licence for a pitbul in the UK?
Due to breed stereotyping. Specific breeds, such as the Pit Bull, are often targeted by the media and portrayed as savage, ferocious killers. Of course, many people believed this and it raised public concern. It was then made illegal to own a Pit Bull Terrier or Pit Bull crossbred in the UK without an official license. If you don't have a license your Pit Bull is taken off you and euthansied. If you do have a license, the Pit Bull must wear a muzzle, be kept on the lead and be sterilized. Of course, many other breeds such a Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, Dobermanns and German Shepherds are also a target of the media but as yet no other bans for these breeds have been made. It is hoped that one day people will see sense and realise that Pit Bull's aren't born 'evil' as it is how they are raised. Blame the deed, not the Breed!
Unfortunately, yes. Due to the media hype causing undue panic from the public, the much criticized Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 was rushed through Parliament and came into force in the UK. This Act bans the ownership, selling or breeding of one of four breeds of Dog, the Pit Bull, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Tosa Inu. There is an Exempted Dogs Index, but you cannot simply apply to be on it. First you must be convicted of the crime of owning a Pit Bull Terrier, have your Dog confiscated and go to court to make a case for why your Dog is not a danger to the public. If the court allows it, your Dog may be added to the Index, but the Dog must then wear a muzzle in public, stay on the lead, be walked by a person over the age of 18, be neutered/spayed, be tattooed and microchipped. If any of these strict rules are broken, your Dog will again be seized and immediately destroyed. Exempted Dogs may also never be resold or change hands.
American Bulldogs are not illegal in the UK, but if someone decided that she was a Pitbull "type" then she could be taken away and destroyed and you could be fined.
