The adder or viper is the only poisonous snake found in Great Britain; it prefers heathland or rocky areas where it can bask in the sun during the day, but is also sometimes found in woodland and other habitats.
As a child I lived at Portland in Dorset - noted for its limestone quarries and the very large number of adders. A few people were bitten every year and the local hospital published instructions that anyone who was bitten should bring the snake to hospital with them. This was because many people were actually bitten by harmless grass snakes and correct identification of the snake was needed in order to provide the correct treatment.
Adder bites are not usually fatal, except among small animals, young children and anyone with an underlying medical condition such as heart trouble.
Every year there was a migration of adders along the connecting gardens in front of the row of houses where I lived; I also once found myself alone and on foot in the middle of a family group of around 6 or 7 adders, who stared at me as I stared at them. Adders will not normally bite unless trodden on or if you try to pick them up. I made a hasty retreat and noticed that the adders were doing exactly the same thing.
