You can get a choke gauge at any gun shop. However- some of the older guns give a slightly off reading due to wear. A dime should fit tightly in a full choke barrell. "Old hand" way of checking. Break open the gun as if loading. Choke should be stamped on the inside just below where the shell would go.. Solo
I have a wards-westernfield 20 g pump, full choke, These guns were manufactured by Stevens-Savage for MW. Mine was handed down to me by my father and was purchased in 1945. So it's at least that old, 64 years. Hope this helps.
Mic the ID of the muzzle compared to the ID of the unchoked bore. Most of these guns will be Full/Modified or Full/Full. sales@countrygunsmith.net
No risk if it's a modern gun in good condition with a shell of the proper gauge. I wouldn't try in damascus barrels or guns with a "poly choke".
Yes. Standard chokes should be OK. Extra full chokes, on modern turkey guns, no.
You will have to have the barrels checked by a qualified gun smith to determine what choke they really are. These guns were made by Stevens good but heavy bird guns . full and moified choke settings were standard on these guns Most people with double guns use buck shot in the full barrel and slugs in the modified barrel . If your gun is a12 gauge you can quickly determine your choke setting. take a dime if the dime will not pass the muzzle or is very tight it full choke if the dime is loose it is modified .Keep in mind use standard remmington or whinchester rifled slugs some of the higher pwerd slug can damage choked barrels RWS etc and many choked barrels do not shoot slugs very well at all .If you are hunting at ranges under 40 yard s your old gun will be fine
In both the U.S. and British scale of chokes, Full choke is the tightest choke for game guns (there are some "extra tight" chokes but these are generally for other thsan game guns). The English 3/4 (three quarter) choke is equivalent to the U.S. "Improved Modified" The English 1/2 (quarter ) choke is equivant to the U.S. "modified" In other words the Mod choke is one half the tightness of a full choke and a the Improved Modified is three quarters the tightness of a full choke.
ABOUT .660 IN A 12 GA SHOTGUN, TIGHEST NORMAL CHOKE EXCEPT FOR NEW TURKEY GUNS.
No. Slugs are slightly undersized, and hollow, very soft lead- they can squeeze down a bit. A LOT of .410s are full choke guns.
FULL CK. IS + MOD. CK. IS+-, LOCATEDON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BARREL NEAR THE BREECH.
Briley makes choke tubes for Yildiz guns but only in 12 gauge Trulock is making them now in standard and extended versions. http://www.trulockchokes.com
I can say that the stevens modl 94A was made from 1926-1945,with a total production of 934,000 guns made during that time span. That is the best that I can do.
