In order to be a living thing, apples would need to fit all of the following categories: It must reproduce. It must be made up of cells. It must be based on a universal genetic code. It must grow and develop. It must obtain and use materials and energy. It must respond to its environment. It must maintain a stable internal environment. Taken as a group, it must change over time. Many of these are in question regarding an apple, but maintaining a stable internal environment is definitely not something that an apple can do, therefore it is not a living thing
