Yes, yes, yes!! During its lifetime 1 canvas bag will eliminate the need for 1000 plastic ones.

Annually 500 BILLION plastic bags are produced, most of which either end up as litter or landfill. The average use of a plastic bag is 12 minutes but it will take 100s of years to decompose. Plastic (including bags) is also responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of animals in our seas each year.

The main reason canvas bags are considered good for the environment is the elimination of waste. One bag is purchased once and can be reused many times. It is estimated that by using just 1 canvas bag you will eliminate the need for 1000 plastic bags, many of which would become litter.

Tupperware is much better than plastic bags! A plastic bag is usually thrown away after one use. The water needed to clean your Tupperware is still better than plastic bags.

Jute and cotton are made from natural fibres unlike plastic bags which are based on petroleum products. So one advantage is less reliance on oil. However, in many areas in which cotton is growing, the high demand for water is causing problems with water supply and also serious soil degradation.

Is paper better than plactic or is plactic better than paper?

Whether paper is better than plastic depends on how it is used. As a writing material, paper is often better. As a conveyance for flowing liquids, plastic is usually better than paper. For bags, if you are unable to use reusable grocery bags (which are readily available for very low prices but require periodic laundering), paper is the much better option. Paper bags, while not exactly environmentally friendly, can at least be composted or recycled. Plastic bags have very few secondary uses, and are almost always simply thrown in the trash.
