As long as the monitor uses a VGA cable, which is the most common type of video connection, the monitor should be compatible with all desktop computers. Some monitors can use, or may require a DVI input which not all computers have. Some monitors (like really fancy ones) require drivers to be effectively used by the computer. Usually they come on a CD with the monitor or are available for download from the manufacturer's website.

Nope you cant use any monitor with any pc... you need the proper graphics card. For example, if you want to use the latest 24" Samsung, you would need a good graphics card in order to be able to run the proper resolutions on it..
They are for desktops or if you are using it as a secondary monitor but they are not interchangeable if it is a laptop screen.
