not really. Typically forensic scientists are the ones who actually test evidence and the investigators are the ones who collect and catalog it.

Example: Crime scene investigator finds a pair of blood stained pants. - forensic scientists look for fibers on the pants and test the blood.

really there are similar but not exactly the same, but they still work in the same field.

Not necessarily. "Homicide" is dealing only with murder between humans. However, "Crime Scene Investigation" could stretch from rape to burglaries (homicides too, though... it's still a crime).

A homicide detective is assigned homicides exclusively.

In smaller departments an officer assigned duty as a detective may find themselves investigating ALL types of crimes which occur in their jurisdiction - including homicides.

There are many types of specialty areas to which detectives are assigned and in larger departments that have the luxury of specialization, they are grouped by their area of primary endeavor; robbery, homicide, sex crimes, fraud, pawn detail, prostitution and perversion. These descriptions delineate their area of specialization. Part of being specialized is continuing education. Detectives are constantly going to classes, seminars, and other events that relate to their specialty.

A police detective may work different types of crimes, robbery, white collar, grand theft auto, drugs, etc. When detectives are assigned or called out on cases, it is done by their specialty (in departments that have them).

Overall, a detective is a detective is a detective. They will work what they are given, but specialized detectives tend to have more knowledge and background in specific areas.

Usually, the homicide detectives have worked their way up, homicide being the feather in their cap. Homicide investigators are usually acknowledged to be at the top of the investigation craft.
