Emus used to be found in Tasmania, but European settlement resulted in their extinction there. Two dwarf species of emu inhabited Kangaroo Island (off the South Australian coast) and King Island (in Bass Strait) but they also became extinct, mostly due to being hunted by whalers and sailors.

∙ 14y agoEmus are related to ostriches, cassowaries, kiwis, and rheas. Emus and cassowaries are both Australian, while kiwis are from New Zealand, rheas from South America, and ostriches from Africa.
Emus developed solely in Australia simply because the continent broke away from the rest of the world's land mass very, very early in earth's development. Stranded here, away from other parts, they developed in their own unique, emu way.
