Yes. For instance, /home/user/myfile.txt , /home/user/MyFile.txt, and /home/user/MYFILE.TXT are all considered separate file names. If you use the wrong case, the shell will not perform the task, but instead give an error message.

Command-line input and file systems are case-sensitive on traditional Unix-like systems. However not all Unix-like systems are this way, Mac OSX is a Unix-like system which can be configured to use a case-insensitive file system. Additionally some command-line shells may correct mistakes with case; such would be possible with zsh.

Linux uses case sensitive file names but as far as I'm aware of and according to my experience Windows doesn't use case sensitive file/folder names.

  • An example output of creating a folder with uppercase and lowercase B letter in Windows environement
C:\Users\Buddika\Desktop>mkdir buddika

C:\Users\Buddika\Desktop>mkdir Buddika

A subdirectory or file Buddika already exists.

No, you can look for a file by typing in the name in your spotlight (magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner) and it will bring up the biggest hits for that name.
