This is a question I am still conducting a study on. In general, a goose is the most protective during the nesting season and after the goslings are born. (As would any family that was expecting or just had young ones.)

But the level of tha protectiveness depends on the individual goose. The father is usually the one doing the protecting and I have seen their concern vary from just swimming up to the shore to see who I am, all the way to challenging cars beak to grill in the parking lot.
